Thriller Malayalam Movie Review - A mass masala entertainer

Thriller , Language: Malayalam
Direction: B Unnikrashnan, Starring: Prithviraj, Lalu Alex, Siddhiq, Sampath, Kollam Thulasi
Release: 17th November 2010

Malayalam film fans had always enjoyed a lot of police investigation movies in the past. I am a big fan of movies like CBI Series, Tiger, Crime File, Oru Abhibashakante Case Diary etc.. Reason behind the decision to watch the movie on the very first day was simple - because I am craze about this kind of movies. I saw the movie from Prabha Talkies, Thalassery - 6 PM show.

Note: This is a PRITHVIRAJ Movie.

Plot: Loosely based on a real life murder mystery which made sensation in Kerala in near past. Prithviraj is Niranjan DCP, a daring police officer who is not afraid of anything, witness a murder in high way. He is then deputed for the investigation on the murder of a business magnet on a highway. - Its too early to reveal more since the movie is a suspense thriller.
Performance: This is an out and out Prithviraj movie, from frame one to frame last. There is hardly a scene without Prithviraj. Prithviraj had done well enough to please his fans and to irritate few. Still, he is very convincing and stylish in the uniform. We had seen a lot of actors in the same uniform and I have to say this - some actors are made for such roles, and the name of one such actor is Suresh Gopi. Here Prithviraj reminds us that he is the most stylish actor from Kerala, but sill missing something when he in the uniform. Performance wise, he had done his best. Extremely good in action sequences and dialog delivery. But Prithviraj has to be very careful when selecting roles like this because he is getting type-casted like that of Vijay or Vishal in Tamil. What ever, with the stylish scenes and actions sequences which simply boost Prithviraj too much will help him to create a genre of fans following. But at the same time too much of SHOW OFF will spoil his image with family viewers. Sampath, yet another stylish villain role for him in Malayalam after Sagar Alias Jacky and Anwar but not used well. All other actors had done their job well.
Music: One good duet song and two boring fast numbers. I wonder why everybody is using a lot of Tamil words for a fast number in Malayalam movie. The theme music is good but is irritating because of the excess usage of the same music (*around 50 times) throughout the movie.
Editing and technical aspects: Is bad enough to raise 100s of questions. The slow motion! Who invented slow motion, they actually forgot to mention a 'thanks' label in the title board. Half of the time Prithviraj is shown in slow motion walking right towards the camera from a long angle. That was entertaining and received well by the viewers in the initial part of the movie. He walks to the screen in so slow-slow motion around 15 times. And of course there are a lot more slow motion scenes, whenever Prithviraj looks around, whenever Prithviraj takes his sun glasses and whenever there is a scene including Prithviraj.
Stunt by Anal Arasu: Anal Arasu is the man behind the movie, I guess. There are 5 fight sequences and each sequence is 4 to 6 minutes long. After watching carefully I could find only one, single punch to Prithviraj - ie in the fight sequence in harbor. That too a push and not exactly a punch. Overall - is good, and have a good Tamil favor, hero boosting.
Story and Direction: The thread was very promising, a real life murder case - the paper news at the time of the happening was itself like a Agatha Christie story. But execution? its not up-to the mark. Unnikrishnan, the director of 'Madambi' failed miserably here. Direction is too bad that there are a lot of loose ends and the so called crazy suspense is very predictable after few reals in very first half itself. Myself and friends was damn sure about the killer, but could'n guess the reason or motive behind the murder. And when the reason was revealed in the final scene we were shocked and started laughing. Lot of unwanted repeated scenes such as 'the slow motion walk of Prithviraj', '5 slow motion action sequences' etc.. spoils the real style of the movie. The same problems like that of 'Anwar'. The director is defenitely inspired from Shaji Khailas style of movie making, many shots reminds us of Shaji Khailas movies. Eg: Smash Cut to Prithviraj's lips, fingers, a book.
And this is my final word - a good thread in a wrong hand.
Writer had used a lot of English dialogs, I feel the length of the English dialogs are 'too much' for front benchers to accept those, because I heard a lot of shouting in the theater. And at the end, dialogs have a good mass appeal.
Eg:
'You will curse the day you born'
'Fear will Fear me'
Te first few scenes reminded me of Tamil film 'Vettayadu Vilayadu', another police story. Have very similar scenes : A Title Banner - Action sequence to introduce our hero - again the title with a hero boosting song - the the movie starts as normal. - didn't felt as accident.
Mistakes or goofs:
1. When Niranjan tells Meera that 'she is the only witness for the Martin Dinakar's meeting with Simon Palathinkal' actually they / he forgot a whole song sequence and a dialog in first half where - an ex girl friend of Simon Palathinkal reveals that she had seen 'Martin Dinakar threatening Simon Palathinkal, and she is really had an unforgettable day', and there is a bar dance sequence (Song) were both Simon Palathinkal and Martin Dinakar dances with few half nude girls.
2. A particular scene is shown in four different period but only one of those scene have the vehicle's headlight on. - silly mistakes are endless but might spoil the suspense factor of the movie.
Prediction: This movie will help 'Karyasthan' to collect more. Thanks to 'Anwar', Initial pull for a Prithviraj film is increased. My prediction is - this movie will end as a below average grosser in the theater and with the help of TV rights which was already (Rumored) sold for a record prize, the movie might escape from being called as a FLOP. And Prithviraj is moving very fast towards the the title 'Leading star of Malayalam Industry'
Overall - I enjoyed few parts. Could have been much better, and immediate editing required in the first half. This movie is for die-hard Prithviraj fans.
