Onam is the state festival of Kerala. Onam Festival falls on the
Malayalam month of Chingam (August – September). The annual Onam
festival is celebrated for 10 days and the festival starts with the
Tripunithura Athachamayam Festival, which falls on the Atham nakshatram
of the Malayalam month of Chingam. The 10th day is celebrated as
Thiruonam (Main Onam). This year, Onam 2011 celebrations starts from
31st August 2011 and Thiruonam is celebrated on 9th September 2011.
The peoples of Kerala draw Onam Pookalam (also known as Athapookalam or Onapookkalam) in front of the house. Onam Pookalam is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor to welcome King Mahabali, the Asura king of ancient Kerala whose rule is said to be the golden era of Kerala.
