Movie Review: Christian Brothers (Mal)

Director Joshi’s movies have always been bigger than life. Multi-casts are in line with his fare almost always. Christian Brothers the latest flick by this veteran director, after his magnum opus Twenty 20, has been in news since for long mostly for the star cast that anything else. With such a high expectation and possibly a comeback hit for Mohan l al after a few flop, every Lalettan fan was waiting impatiently for this release. Christian Brothers didn’t disappoint them. At the outset, a shorter version would have been just right. Perhaps to give screen time for the starts Mohan Lal, Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Sharath Kumar, perhaps the Director had little choice. The New Theatre looked ready for all the die-hard, flex hugging fans. Needless to say the cinema hall was full long before the scheduled start.  Courtesy FilmyDum.com The story line is the clichéd revenge and rivalry but a superb star cast with experienced direction makes it all go unnoticed. Not so for trained eyes though. Joshi has made every attempt to give it a fresh and never attempted style to every shot and it seems to have worked. Mohan Lal plays Christy - a pivotal character – quite obviously. He looked younger, fresh and well-attired for a change. His dialogues gave goose bumps all the while and the punch phrase “haraharooo” is probably going to be a hit among the youth. Lekshmi Rai comes in fleetingly for a couple of songs. Dileep as Joji plays Lal’s brother and he does a good job as usual. The movie revolves mostly around Kavya Madhavan and incidents that affect her. Both Suresh Gopi and Sharath Kumar play crucial roles too. Sai Kumar as Lal’s father has put on a stellar role. Biju Menon, Vijaya Raghavan and Suresh Krishna have done their parts convincingly too. Kaniha and Lekshmi Gopalaswamy as Lal’s sisters have made an impact too. Salim Kumar and Suraaj ring in some light moments as usual and Jagathy does a cameo. Story and screenplay by Sibi-Udayan team though not so fresh but the dialogues compensate in good measure. The songs by Deepak Dev are runaway hits for sure but they seem to sound like they have close resemblances to songs from other languages – the Vidilla Njan song resembles Dheeem Dhanakka Thillaaana and the duet Kannum seems to have its cousin in Tamil or Hindi. Background music by Rajamani does well and as a whole the new release by Joshi is a nice package just that the length of the movie can become a bit too much for comfort, especially if you are watching with family/kids. Direction: Joshi Cast: Mohan Lal, Lekshmi Rai, Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Sharath Kumar, Sai Kumar, Biju Menon, Kaniha, Lekshmi Gopalaswamy Vijaya Raghavan, Suresh Krishna, Salim Kumar, Suraaj Venjaramoodu, Jagathy Sreekumar and Kavya Madhavan Story, Screen play and dialogue: Sibi-Udayan Music: Deepak Dev Ratin നായികമാര്‍ക്ക് അത്ര അവകാശപ്പെടാനില്ല ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്‍. മീനാക്ഷിയായി കാവ്യാ മാധവന്‍ ആണ് എത്തുന്നത്. കാവ്യയുടെ തടിച്ച പ്രകൃതം നായികയ്ക്ക് അത്ര ചേരുന്നില്ലെന്ന് പറയേണ്ടി വരും. മോഹന്ലാലിന്റെ സഹോദരിമാരായി ലക്ഷ്മി ഗോപാലസ്വാമിയും കനിഹയും അഭിനയിക്കുന്നു. കാമുകി കഥാപാത്രമായി ലക്ഷ്മി റായിയും സിനിമയിലുണ്ട്. ചിത്രത്തില്‍ ഏറ്റവും അരോചകമായ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയാതിരിക്കാനാകില്ല. സുരാജ് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കുക്കിന്റെ വളിച്ച തമാശകള്‍ ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയല്ല ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൂക്കിവിളികളാണ് സുരാജിന്റെ തമാശകള്‍ക്ക് ഏല്‍ക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നത്. മൊത്തം ചിത്രം പരിഗണിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആരാധകരില്‍ ഓളം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നത് തന്നെ ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് എന്നു പറയാം. ആ രീതിയില്‍ കണക്കിലെടുത്താല്‍ ഈ സിനിമ സൂപ്പര്‍ഹിറ്റാകും. നാടിളക്കി മറിച്ച്‌ ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് എത്തി  മോഹന്‍‌ലാലിനൊപ്പം സുരേഷ്‌ഗോപി, ദിലീപ്‌, തമിഴ്‌ നടന്‍ ശരത്‌കുമാര്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ അണിചേരുന്ന ഈ മള്‍‌ട്ടി സ്റ്റാര്‍ ചിത്രം ചില്ലറ റെക്കോര്‍ഡുകളൊന്നുമല്ല ഇട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. കേരളത്തില്‍ മാത്രം 170 കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലാണ് ചിത്രം പ്രദര്‍ശനത്തിനെത്തുന്നത്. ചെന്നൈയില്‍ ഏഴ് തിയേറ്ററുകളില്‍ റിലീസ് ചെയ്യും. മൊത്തം 300 പ്രിന്‍റുകള്‍ റിലീസ് ചെയ്യും. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് മാത്രം ശ്രീകുമാര്‍, ന്യൂ, ശ്രീവൈശാഖ് എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്ന് തീയേറ്ററുകളിലാണ് ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് റിലീസ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. മലയാളത്തിലെ മറ്റു ചാനലുകളുമായി മത്സരിച്ച് മൂന്ന് കോടി രൂപയുടെ വന്‍ തുകയ്ക്ക് ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റാണ് ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സിന്റെ സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് അവകാശം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയത്. മറ്റൊരു മള്‍‌ട്ടിസ്റ്റാര്‍ ചിത്രമായ ട്വന്റി20-യെ സൂര്യ ടിവി 2.86 കോടിയ്ക്ക് വാങ്ങിയതിന്റെ ക്ഷീണം തീര്‍ക്കാന്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി - ഹരിഹരന്‍ ടീമിന്റെ പഴശ്ശിരാജ എന്ന സിനിമ ഏഷ്യാനെറ്റ് 2.60 കോടിയ്ക്ക് സ്വന്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് ഈ റെക്കോര്‍ഡുകളെല്ലാം ചാക്കില്‍ കെട്ടിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്. അഞ്ച് കോടിയ്ക്ക് മേല്‍ ചെലവ് വന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സാറ്റലൈറ്റ്, ഓവര്‍സീസ്, ഓഡിയോ റൈറ്റുകള്‍ എന്നിവ വിറ്റ വന്‍ തുക കണക്കാക്കുമ്പോള്‍ റിലീസിന് മുമ്പേ ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് ലാഭത്തിലാണ്. ഇനി പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ വിധിയെഴുത്ത് മാത്രമാണ് ക്രിസ്ത്യന് ബ്രദേഴ്സിന് മുന്നിലുള്ളത്. ‘പൊരി ചാക്കു’ ആയി മോഹന്‍‌ലാല്‍ തകര്‍ത്ത് അഭിനയിക്കുകയാണെന്നാണ് തീയേറ്ററുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് മൊബൈല്‍ വഴി ആരാധകര്‍ ട്വീറ്റുന്നത്. |
