Plot: A flight with around 80 passengers on board from Chennai to Delhi gets hijacked within few minutes of its take off. There are five hijackers inside the plane. The hijackers just want to take the plane to Pakistan, but because of some technical issues the flight was forced to take an emergence landing. Situation gets worse and passengers get killed by the terrorist. Terrorists then demand the government to release a person named Yousuf Khan and to pay a bulk amount. Major Ravi (Nagarjuna) appeal for a commando operation but the authorities refuses. At last the officials decide to release Yousuf Khan. But Yousuf Khan dies in an accident on the way to the spot. With no other option left, officials give permission to Major Ravi( Ravindran) to take up the commando operation.
Radha Mohan given importance not only to action scenes but painted the state of mind of passengers. Radha Mohan deserves salute for the presentation which makes the viewers feel as if they are watching a real life incident live updates in a news channels.
Nagarjuna is there as if the character is born for him. His performance is one of the top most aspects of this film and his screen presence is awesome. I don’t think any other hero in Telugu industry would have tried this much of different characters like Nagarjuna. Salute for him for doing a role which doesn’t have any kind of heroism, duets or stylish dialogs.
Prakash Raj proves again and other actors including Sana Khan, Brahamanandam etc had done their parts well.
Cinematography by KV Guhan is extremely good in capturing the state of mind of the actors. Most of the scenes are inside a flight but still viewers won’t feel boring.
Art director clearly deserves appreciation for creating the plane set which looks so original.
Pluses:
The movie doesn’t deviate from what it is all about. This is the best thing about the movie.
No songs
No commercial ingredients.
No Romance.
No over the top action sequences.
No sizzling dialogs to boost the hero.
Good Plot.
Realistic presentation.
The twist just before the interval.
Fast second half.
Terrorist, kid episode.
Thrilling finale one hour.
Nagarjuna’s amazing performance.
Minuses:
Few unnecessary scenes with the passengers.
Nothing else.
Not for mass masala film fans.
My point: look out for the Interval twist and the final one hour. Commando operation is simply superb.
Gaganam / Payanam is not a mass masala super star movie but is definitely a must watch for true movie lovers. This is a movie which truly deserves ‘super hit’ status.
Overall: Movie starts off slowly, a very interesting and shocking twist in the interval, good second half, splendid final hour. Expected to do well in Metros and multiplexes, but will find hard to go well with B and C centers.
My favorite scene: Scene when a terrorist talk to a child in the plane with so much love has the director’s touch.
An Interesting point I noticed: Major Ravi (Major Ravindran) is the name of the character played by Nagarjuna, coincidently there was a major release in Malayalam on Dec 2010, movie name was Kandahar with a similar theme, starring Mohanlal and Amithabh Bhachchan. The director of the Malayalam movie was ‘Major Ravi’. Major Ravi (Major Ravindran) was also a commando officer in Indian Army.
